MORFOLOGIA

 

Portamento e dimensioni: pianta erbacea perenne che raggiunge gli 80 centimetri di altezza.

 

Stelo: allungato, dalla sezione quadrangolare e spesso privo di foglie.

 

Foglie: strettamente lanceolate e lunghe fino a 6,5 centimetri. Entrambe le pagine sono glabre e quindi prive di peli.

 

Fiori: compaiono tra giugno e agosto, in infiorescenze erette dal colore bianco. I petali presentano lobi apiculati.

 

Frutti e semi: frutti schizocarpici, che a maturità si separano in due porzioni reniformi, lisci e privi di peli.

 

DISTRIBUZIONE E HABITAT

 

Pianta originaria dell’Europa sud-occidentale, diffusa in Italia fino a 1.500 m sul livello del mare, soprattutto nelle regioni settentrionali. Cresce in faggete e boschi misti di latifoglie decidue. Si può trovare anche in zone umide e lungo corsi d’acqua.

CURIOSITÀ

 

Il nome del genere deriva dal greco “gala” (= latte): diverse specie di Galium venivano infatti usate in passato per far cagliare il latte nella lavorazione del formaggio. Il nome specifico si riferisce alla punta acuta presente all’apice dei petali.

MORPHOLOGY

Growth habit and size: perennial herbaceous plant reaching a height of 80 centimeters.

Stem: elongated, quadrangular in cross-section and often leafless.

Leaves: narrowly lanceolate and up to 6.5 cm long. Both pages are glabrous and therefore hairless.

Flowers: appear between June and August in erect white inflorescences. The petals have apiculate lobes.

Fruits and seeds: schizocarpic fruits, which separate when ripe into two kidney-shaped, smooth and hairless portions.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT

Plant native to south-western Europe, widespread in Italy up to 1,500 m above sea level, especially in northern regions. It grows in beech forests and mixed deciduous broadleaf woods. It can also be found in wetlands and along watercourses.

USE

Edible plant.

INTERESTING FACTS

The genus name derives from the Greek ‘gala’ (= milk): several species of Galium were in fact used in the past to curdle milk in cheese-making. The specific name refers to the sharp point at the apex of the petals.
