Black Bogrush
Scientific name: Schoenus nigricans L.
Family: Cyperaceae
MORPHOLOGY
Habit and Size: Perennial plant, up to 80 cm tall, forming dense and tough clumps.
Stem: Stems generally curved.
Leaves: Rush-like leaves, at least half the length of the stem, with glossy black lower sheaths and a sharp apex.
Flowers: Inflorescence composed of 5-15 spikes. These are black, shiny, lanceolate, typically with 2-3 flowers, occasionally up to 5 flowers. Blooms from March to July.
Fruits and Seeds: The fruit is an achene, white or marble-like.
DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
Grows throughout Italy from 0 to 1,500 m in wet meadows, fens, but also in back-dune environments, and often in dry habitats.
